Let's Talk About Resilience!
Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall
What is resilience?
Resilience is our ability to adapt and go on in the face of adversity. It is also one of the keys to achieving positive mental health.
A positive view of yourself and having confidence in your own abilities help contribute to resilience. Skills in problem-solving and having a positive attitude while taking up challenges in your life are factors that we can develop in ourselves. These help us to make realistic plans and to see through these plans. They also help with motivation to move on, even when things are not going our way at times.
When we have a resilient mind, we think in flexible and balanced ways, become aware of what we are thinking, aware of our deep rooted beliefs and learn how to challenge our negative thinking.
Tips on Building Resilience
Accept that things do not usually go the way we want it to, and be ready to accept changes. Some circumstances cannot be changed and we have to change the way we see it or face it instead
Build good relationships with family and friends. Accept their help and support in times of need. Some people find good support from faith based organisations.
Plan and develop realistic goals. Take small steps and celebrate each small achievement.
Develop a positive self image. Do not evaluate your own worth and abilities based on one person’s comments or opinion. Set your own expectations as you will not be able to satisfy everyone a;; at the same time.
Recognize your own feelings and thoughts, and explore a different perspective at times. It helps to consider a stressful situation in a broader context.
Take care of your physical and mental health. Sufficient sleep and healthy eating forms the basis of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly and plan little pockets of time to relax and enjoy a favourite moment.
